Simone Biles opened up about experiencing the "twisties" during the Tokyo Olympics, which forced her to withdraw from individual all-around gymnastics. This opened up a conversation around mental health. (News flash, MENTAL HEALTH IS REAL).
In the last few days, we have heard thousands of people giving their opinions on the whole Simone Biles situation. The United States, like with most things, is completely split. Some people are applauding her for being real, some are commending her for putting her mental health first, some are judging her saying that she gave up, and some are saying that she's selfish.
Well, guess what, we have no right to criticize her. Who are we to criticize a professional athlete who spent their entire life training for this moment while we just sit back watching tv eating a bag of Cheetos? We haven't put that amount of blood, sweat, and tears into being an Olympic athlete, and honestly, we probably wouldn't survive the workouts that she/they do. We aren't qualified to be judging her!
Come on guys, let's be a little more empathetic. We never know what someone is going through. Everyone was so quick to judge Simone for taking a step back, but she was also silently facing the loss of her aunt. Loss is hard, who could blame her?
Before you speak, or before you judge, take a second to remember that we never know a person's full story.
